As the popularity of golf continues growing at a record pace, so too does San Antonio's reputation as one of Texas' most popular destinations to play the grand old game. The city and neighboring towns are home to more than 40 public, private and military courses and practice facilities; with its lush and varied terrain and more than 300 days of sunshine annually, San Antonio is the perfect spot for year-round golfing. The Westin La Cantera Resort will feature an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course as well as a 500-room luxury hotel, which opened in May 1999. The Westin La Cantera is adjacent to the La Cantera Golf Club, which hosted the 78th edition of the PGA Tour's Westin Texas Open at La Cantera. Another addition to the San Antonio golf scene is Canyon Springs Golf Course. The Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort, the first full-scale resort in San Antonio and Hyatt's first resort in Texas, opened in February, 1993. San Antonio has eight municipal and public golf courses, including Cedar Creek Golf Course in northwest San Antonio. Another municipal course, Brackenridge Golf Course, opened in 1916 - making it the oldest public course in Texas. Other municipal courses are Mission del Lago, Olmos Basin, Riverside and Willow Springs. Pecan Valley Golf Course, also minutes from downtown, hosted the 50th PGA Championship. 'The Quarry' is built on the striking 85-acre site of the former Alamo Cement Quarry in northeast San Antonio, next to the Quarry Market shopping center. SilverHorn Golf Club, a public, daily-fee golf course, covers a 262-acre tract in north San Antonio. Four country clubs also offer courses that are available for tournaments for convention and other groups. Among them is Sonterra Country Club, where golfers encounter challenging water hazards at nearly every hole - and can find respite in Sonterra's magnificent $7 million clubhouse. Besides the Westin Texas Open at La Cantera, the SBC Championship at The Dominion brings some of the biggest names in the Senior PGA TOUR to town each spring. Local firms are available to help arrange tournaments and outings at public and private courses in San Antonio.
