In the Market Square Area of Downtown (El Mercado), Mi Tierra must be experienced. Imagine yourself in a large open-air market that can go on for blocks, enclose it and you have Mi Tierra. This authentic Mexican restaurant, with its colorful piñatas and other Mexican art hanging above the dessert counter always has a crowd.
To one side of the entry is the bar; the large dessert counter is the point at which you enter and the dining area goes on and on and on past the dessert counter. The oldest, family-operated restaurant in Market Square, having been in business since l941, has some of the most loyal employees. Large colorful murals on the walls depict early Tejano life and the colorful costumes of the era. But of note is that the faces of these early Tejanos are the faces of the current employees! That's right! Employees with 20 years or more of service were told they could submit a photo of themselves and would be honored on the murals.
The food and service are excellent. Even though there may be lines of patrons waiting for tables, it seems your wait is not long. The desserts and candies are fresh and many come in just to purchase these items. There is Mariachi music nightly. Seating accommodates over 250 and prices range $5 - $16. Since Mi Tierra is open 24 hours a day, there is no reason to miss this experience
