A first visit to San Antonio must include dining at Casa Rio, the first commercial establishment along the river in l946. Designing its menu after the Original Mexican Restaurant founded in 1899 on Losoya Street, one of the most popular dishes was the "Regular Plate"--an enchilada, tamale, chili con carne, rice and beans, served with corn tortillas, chips and hot sauce-- which, in 1946, sold for 55¢. This is still on the menu today- just not at that price.
Employees here are loyal and some have been with the family for years--one joining the restaurant in 1947 at 15 and another since he was 17.
Before the tour barges were in effect along the river, Casa Rio used a gondola with its name emblazoned on the side to give patrons a ride along the river. On river level, Casa Rio seats approximately 200; menus range from $5 to $15. Boat dinners are available by reservation.
