Exhibiting over 3,000 animals and 700 species, it is ranked one of the best in the nation. Encompassing 25 landscaped acres it contains one of the largest bird collections in the world. The rock quarry environment has proven to be home-like settings to many of the zoo animals. The San Antonio Zoo's captive breeding success has been nationally recognized. The Zoo was the first to hatch and rear Caribbean flamingos, it produced the first white rhinoceros born in North America, and is internationally acclaimed for its breeding success of the rare snow leopard.. Over the past 30 years, 56 Snow Leopards were born in San Antonio and have been acquired by other zoos throughout the world. The zoo also has several other endangered species and is the only facility to exhibit endangered whooping cranes.
