Thirty-three acres are formed into a lovely setting at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. The lush and colorful displays reflect a variety of Texas exhibits. It is also home to the Halsell Conservatory, a 90,000 sq ft. glass structure comprising seven glass spires built in the late l980s. Some of the conservatory sits underground, making it a very comfortable escape from the hot Texas summers.
There are three regions that are explored - The East Texas piney woods, Southwest Texas Plains and Central Texas hill country. Each region displays its role in Texas history by using a variety of indigenous plants and trees. One third of the gardens are devoted to more formal settings including an aquatic garden that has an observation lookout. Many of the trees and plants are of biblical recognition such as fig trees, crown of thorn and date palms. A special scent and touch garden is devoted to the blind. Railings with Braille informational plaques allow the blind to enjoy this special area.
